Arsenal have been given a major boost to their hopes of signing a new striker this month.

The Gunners have been heavily linked with some big names like Victor Osimhen and Ivan Toney during the January transfer window but, with Edu working on a hamstrung budget, a cheaper alternative could explored instead.

According to widespread reports, Arsenal have been tracking Victor Boniface. The 23-year-old striker, who sees his contract expire in 2028, has featured 16 times for Bayer Leverkusen in the Bundesliga this season, scoring ten goals and providing seven assists.

His impressive performances have reportedly courted the interest of Chelsea too, with Mauricio Pochettino also in the market for a new frontman.

It remains to be seen whether or not Boniface will swap the Bundesliga for the Premier League, but Leverkusen’s latest activity in the January transfer window could suggest that a move is on the cards in the near future. Interestingly, according to Sky Sports Germany, Xabi Alonso’s side has identified Borja Iglesias as a ‘top’ target.

The report states that the German club want to sign the 31-year-old on loan with an option to buy, and negotiations with Real Betis are currently ongoing. While Alonso may simply just want to sign a strike partner for Boniface, the Spaniard could also be looking to replace the Arsenal and Chelsea target.

Speaking on The Obi One Podcast earlier this month, John Obi Mikel backed his fellow countryman to soon become the ‘complete striker’. The former Chelsea midfielder said: “He will become a complete striker in the next couple of years.

“He has the physique, he is quick, good on the ball, technically very good and it’s difficult to see strikers that are that big and strong and powerful and then good on the ball as well.

“His assists as well, not just scoring goals, is something that will make this kid special, really, really special. I can’t wait to see what his journey will be in the next couple of years.”

At just 23, Boniface is already rubbing shoulders with some of the most clinical strikers in Europe. In fact, only Harry Kane, Serhou Guirassy and Lois Openda have scored more goals than the £51.4million-rated ace in the Bundesliga this season.
