Arsenal have made Aston Villa midfielder Douglas Luiz their top target ahead of the January transfer window, according to reports.

Mikel Arteta’s side have been dealt a fresh blow this week as Thomas Partey has been ruled out until the start of 2024 at the earliest after he underwent a thigh operation.

Arsenal had targeted Brentford striker Ivan Toney ahead of the January window but according to Fabrizio Romano, the Gunners are prioritising a move for Luiz this winter.

‘The top name from what I’m hearing on Arsenal’s list is Douglas Luiz,’ Romano said on his YouTube channel.

‘The player was on the list two years ago, Edu and other people at the club really appreciate him.

‘Douglas Luiz is considered the perfect midfielder by people at Arsenal. They would love to sign him and retire on Douglas Luiz.’

Romano also claims that Arsenal have retained their interest in Real Sociedad midfielder Martin Zubimendi but the 24-year-old is keen to stay with the Spanish club at least until the end of the season.
