Arsenal ready to advance in talks to sign Mikel Merino next week

The Spaniard was ‘incredible’ for his country at the Euros and Merino could be Arsenal’s new Xhaka, a left-footer with a similarly complete skill-set.

And, Fabrizio Romano has now shared an update on X detailing that Arsenal are ready to ‘advance in talks’ for Merino next week.

The journalist stated that Real Sociedad’s asking price will be key, but said the Gunners are very well-positioned.

Romano shared: “Arsenal are prepared to advance in talks with Mikel Merino’s camp next week, after positive contacts.

“He’s not only name on [the] list but well positioned; price tag requested by Real Sociedad will be key.

“Arteta appreciates him; as soon as ESR leaves, Arsenal can proceed.”

So whilst Smith Rowe’s departure will be difficult for some Arsenal fans, it’s clear that funds raised will be important in improving Arteta’s squad depth.

The England international doesn’t have an obvious position in Arteta’s plans, and effectively replacing Smith Rowe with Merino makes sense from all angles.
