Arsenal remain interested in signing Borussia Dortmund defender Nico Schlotterbeck nearly two years since missing out on him.

The Left-footer centre backs have been a feature of Arsenal’s setup ever since Mikel Arteta’s arrival.

Pablo Mari arrived in Arteta’s first window, representing something of a stop-gap addition in that role.

Gabriel Magalhaes arrived just months later and Arsenal added another left-sided centre back in January of this year with Jakub Kiwior arriving.

There have been questions about Kiwior’s future amid interest from Italian clubs and Arsenal are still eyeing other options in that role, maybe just in case they receive an offer for Kiwior they can’t refuse.

The Athletic report that Borussia Dortmund defender Nico Schlotterbeck is still on Arsenal’s radar as a ‘long-term’ target.

Reports in 2022 indicated that Arsenal tried to sign Schlotterbeck from Freiburg back in January 2022.

The idea was that Schlotterbeck could replace Pablo Mari as he made a loan move to Udinese.

However, Arsenal were told that Schlotterbeck only wanted to stay in Germany and he completed a move to Borussia Dortmund just months later.

Arsenal have kept tabs on Schlotterbeck though, keeping him on the radar for a potential future move.

Dortmund won’t exactly love the idea of losing Schlotterbeck but Arsenal will be sniffing around in case a deal can be done.

Arsenal youth coach Per Mertesacker has been a fan of Schlotterbeck, previously praising him as a ‘very good’ player.

Mertesacker may well have influenced Arsenal’s chase to some extent by telling Edu his thoughts on his fellow German.

We can’t see Arsenal moving to sign Schlotterbeck in January given the cost it would take to lure him away from Dortmund.

Next summer may be the right time for Arsenal to make a move though with Schlotterbeck a name to keep tabs on moving forward.
