Martinelli then gave Brazil a two-goal cushion the other side of halftime when, less than 10 minutes after the break, Yan Couto pulled his cross back across the face of goal onto an in-striding Martinelli who made it 2-0. However, Alexis Vega’s cross 20 minutes later was tapped in at close range by Julian Quinones to give Mexico hope of a comeback.
That comeback was completed by Guillermo Martínez Ayala’s 92nd minute equaliser from a corner in which his header was first saved by Liverpool goalkeeper Alisson, but the Reds star could only push it back into the path of Ayala whose shot found the far corner to make it 2-2.
But the theatre didn’t end there, with Real Madrid superstar youngster Endrick giving Brazil the last laugh. With six minutes of added time still to play following Mexico’s equaliser, Brazil put the pressure on and the 17-year-old found the back of the net thanks to a brilliant cross from Vinicius Jr. which found the head off Endrick who sent it into the far corner.
After the clash, Martinelli posted three photos to his Instagram, the first two of him lining up during the national anthem before the third showing him and his teammates celebrating his goal, with the caption: “Always an honour to wear this shirt” with a red heart emoji and the Brazilian flag.
After the game, Magalhaes commented “You are great my brother!” with two clapping emojis while the match winner Endrick said: “You played so well!!!”.
