Arsenal will have to make a “big sale” to be able to afford a move for Brentford striker Ivan Toney in the January transfer window, according to recent reports.

Mikel Arteta’s side have often been criticised for lacking a clinical striker in the same fashion as Manchester City, with Erling Haaland leading their line.

The north London outfit often start with Gabriel Jesus, a player that has plenty of quality and can often roam to create, but has only scored one Premier League goal this season.

Meanwhile, Eddie Nketiah is far too inconsistent despite scoring a hat-trick against Sheffield United late last month.

Toney is reported to be the No 1 target once Arsenal enter the market for a new frontman. As the 27-year-old sees his ban for breaching the FA’s betting rules come to an end in January. But it appears a move to the Emirates in the winter window will prove tricky.

The report from the Athletic claims that Arsenal would currently not be able to afford to sign Toney. Brentford are demanding a fee of up to £100million and that would currently be out of the Gunners’ price range.

The same report says the Gunners will have to make a “big sale” to ensure they have the funds possible if they did want a deal. It remains to be seen if that is possible and if so, exactly who could be the player or players moved on to make way for a potential new signing.
