Arsenal signed William Saliba from Saint-Etienne back in 2019 for £27 million. The defender had a difficult first few years as a Gunner. Mikel Arteta refused to give him any opportunities early on, and that forced him to go out on loan.
Saliba had impressive spells at Nice and Marseille. He returned to Arsenal before the start of last season, and he has been one of the first names on the team sheet since.
The 22-year-old is an unbelievable defender. He is up there with the very best, and Arsenal knew clubs would line up for him if he ever became available. That’s why they tied him down to a new contract.
David Ornstein has claimed now that if Saliba was up for sale, every big club in the world would try and sign him.
He wrote in The Athletic: “He has only just signed a new long-term contract and I’ve not heard anything about him wanting to be anywhere else. If he was ever to become available, I’m sure most/all of the world’s biggest clubs would try to sign him.
“Indeed, there was strong interest in him from the Premier League and beyond before he put pen to paper on that deal. But, he is Arsenal property for the foreseeable future and they will be delighted with that.”
