Gabriel Martinelli has sent a warning to Chelsea in Arsenal’s latest training session

Mikel Arteta will have been working his Arsenal stars hard on the Cobham training pitches ahead of a London derby against Chelsea. On paper, the international break arrived at the worst time for the Gunners as any momentum built from a superb win over Manchester City will have been halted, however it has allowed time for an important trio to recover from some minor injuries.

Bukayo Saka, William Saliba and Leandro Trossard were all prevented from going on international duty with the Gunners hopeful they can appear at Stamford Bridge on Saturday. After getting one up on his close friend Pep Guardiola a fortnight ago, Arteta will be hoping he can also tactically outsmart another friend in Mauricio Pochettino after labelling him a role model.

The Gunners have won on their last three visits to west London with only one defeat in their arriving from the last eight meetings. With that said, Arteta is sure to be after yet another victory with several of his first-team stars captured working hard in training.

After striking the winner against Man City, Gabriel Martinelli will be hoping he can receive his first start in over a month after picking up a hamstring injury against Everton.

In the latest set of training images uploaded by Arsenal, the Brazil international was pictured on three occasions with the ball. The first showed him preparing to control a pass with his eyes firmly fixated on the ball with the second showing a rasping effort likely heading towards goal.

And finally, Martinelli was shown moments before taking a corner, perhaps hinting he will be in the starting XI and be on set-pieces.

Partey return

Like Martinelli, Thomas Partey is another Arsenal star in search of a first start in over a month due to injury. The 30-year-old came off the bench against Man City before starting on international duty for Ghana just a few days later after being accompanied by club physiotherapist Simon Murphy to play with his nation.

Given his importance, the Gunners appear to be taking every precaution with Partey and that looks set to continue going off a training hint. Small-sided games are a regular occurrence in training sessions with one team usually forming the starting XI and Partey competing for the ball against Gabriel Jesus and Declan Rice, two expected starters, could suggest it will be another bench appearance for Partey.

Absent trio

As expected, without wanting to give anything away, none of Bukayo Saka, William Saliba and Leandro Trossard were spotted in the latest training images.

Arteta did not rule any of the trio out of the game in his press conference which certainly suggests they have trained however it is entirely possible that the injury issues plaguing the three stars resulted in them missing training.

Jorginho role

Joining Kai Havertz in returning to his old club with Arsenal will be Jorginho. The absence of Partey has seen him deployed behind Declan Rice and with another difficult clash on the horizon, the Italian midfielder could be in line for another start.

His experience is very valuable to Arsenal and his conversion rate from the penalty spot is another bonus that Arsenal could use this weekend. Saka, Martin Odegaard and Havertz have all scored from 12 yards this campaign and Jorginho gives Arteta another option with the January arrival captured taking a penalty in training, with his trademark run-up in full flow.
