Garth Crooks has suggested that Arsenal goalkeeper David Raya is now beginning to look like the real deal after his performance for the Gunners in their win over Liverpool on Sunday.

Mikel Arteta’s men blew the title race wide open with their victory over the Reds at the Emirates. The manner of the win was almost as significant as the result itself, with Jurgen Klopp’s men seemingly unable to get out of second gear.

One of the key moments in the contest came when David Raya launched the ball to Gabriel Martinelli, with Martinelli eventually doing brilliantly to sprint away from Ibrahima Konaté and set up Bukayo Saka for a great chance. It was a reminder of the quality that Raya does have with his distribution. Obviously, the Spaniard has needed some time at the Emirates to find his feet following his summer move. But he has gradually looked more and more comfortable in that number one spot.

And after including him in his team of the week, Garth Crooks told BBC Sport that Raya is really starting to prove his doubters wrong.

“I was rather surprised by the way Mikel Arteta first introduced Raya into the Arsenal set-up, especially when Aaron Ramsdale appeared to have done nothing wrong. However, things have settled down since the Spanish goalkeeper took the number one spot,” he said.

“His confidence has steadily improved with every game. He looked especially commanding in their 2-1 win at Nottingham Forest and even more secure in their 3-1 victory over Liverpool. Consecutive wins have taken the Gunners within two points of Jurgen Klopp’s Premier League leaders and Raya is starting to look like he’s the real deal.”
