Gary Lineker and Alan Shearer both agree that Napoli striker Victor Osimhen should choose Arsenal over Chelsea as Napoli president confirmed the striker will leave the club in the summer.

Arsenal and Chelsea are among the teams to have been linked with a strong interest in the Nigeria international. The Blues saw their efforts to bring Osimhen to Stamford Bridge rebuffed last summer which meant their attention was turned to Nicolas Jackson instead.

Osimhen has been a big target for Arsenal and Chelsea due to their demand for a new centre-forward but a mid-season deal has proven difficult. The Gunners boss Mikel Arteta insisted that he loves the players already at the Emirates Stadium and signing a new striker this month “does not look realistic.”

He said: “At the moment it does not look realistic. What my job is, and what we have to do is improve our players and try to get better results with the players we have.”

Napoli president Aurelio De Laurentiis revealed Osimhen will play the last few months in Naples before departing the club at the end of the season.

He said: “This was already known since this summer, our negotiations [over the new contract] were friendly, otherwise it would not have been so long. We knew he would go to Real Madrid, PSG or a top English club.”

Osimhen only signed a new deal at the club last month, which reportedly includes a release clause of around £112 million. Earlier this week, the striker name-checked the Premier League in an interview, claiming he knew what the next step in his career would be.

He told CBS: “I have already made my decision on the next step to do at the end of the season. I already made up my mind. I already have my plan, I know what I want to do, the next step I want to take.”

Discussing what the Nigerian’s next move should be, both Lineker and Shearer believe a move to the Emirates would be more suited for him. “I think I’d look at it and go, at the moment, Arsenal,” Lineker said.

“Obviously, we’re talking about everyone offers the same thing, that’s what you want, blah blah blah in your contract. I mean, to be honest, they earn so much now that you can just choose where you want to go.

“I would say Arsenal are probably a centre forward away from winning things. Chelsea are a centre forward away from becoming competitive again and Manchester United are a centre forward away from improving but they’ve still got a long way to go. And if I were him, you want to go somewhere where you think you’re going to win things.

“Now, Arsenal have also had the thing about the financial plans, they’ve said they can’t do anything at the moment, whether they can do in the summer with that amount of money, we’ll have to wait and see. He’d be a brilliant signing for all three of them I think. He’s a wonderful all-round centre forward.”
