Jorginho proved once again during the 6-0 thrashing of West Ham that he is a hugely influential figure within the Arsenal dressing room.

Mikel Arteta’s men ran riot at the London Stadium as they kept up their Premier League title charge in style.

Arsenal remarkably stormed into a 4-0 lead at the break with four goals in the space of 15 minutes, with William Saliba opening the scoring just after the half hour mark from a Declan Rice corner. Bukayo Saka then grabbed his first of the game from the penalty spot on 41 minutes.

Gabriel then made it three before Leandro Trossard curled a delightful finish home in first-half injury-time to pile on the misery for West Ham at the London Stadium. And Arsenal were in no mood to let up as they continued their onslaught in the second half.

Saka made it 5-0 with an emphatic finish in the 63rd minute before former West Ham captain and midfielder Rice scored the goal of the game from outside the penalty area. it was the ultimate humiliation for the Hammers and Arteta saw his chance to make some much-needed substitutions before their schedule ramps up with the return of the Champions League.

In the 77th minute, Arteta introduced 16-year-old Ethan Nwaneri onto the pitch for just his second senior appearance for the club after making history at Brentford last season. There are high hopes for the teenager at the Emirates and it appears the Arsenal bench were very keen for him to get his chance on Sunday.

Arteta revealed after the game that his bench were asking him to put Nwaneri on to gain some valuable experience in the Premier League. And it now appears it was Jorginho who led those calls, which highlights his leadership skills and authority within the dressing room.

After Nwaneri posted on Instagram about his cameo, Aaron Ramsdale simply replied: “Get Ethan on @jorginhofrello”. He was not the only Arsenal star to flood into his comments, with Saka and Rice hailing the teenager while Martin Odegaard, Ben White and William Saliba got involved too.

Nwaneri’s team-mates are clearly confident he has a bright future ahead of him at the club, and Arteta said after the game that the squad ‘really trust’ him. After the victory, the Spaniard said: “There is something that you have to earn in your team and that is the trust of your team-mates.

“I had two things. One, the players on the bench whispering, ‘Bring Ethan in!’ – which is a great thing to hear. The other thing is for your team-mates to give you the ball all the time. If they do that, it’s because they really trust you and you only have to see how many times he was involved in that. So it’s a great sign.”
