Lineker shocked Jorginho didn’t start for Arsenal

Arsenal suffered a disappointing 2-0 defeat at home to Aston Villa in what is a huge dent in their Premier League title hopes.

The Gunners failed to capitalise on Liverpool’s shock loss to Crystal Palace, with late goals from Leon Bailey and Ollie Watkins securing Unai Emery a vital three points on his return to the Emirates Stadium.

Mikel Arteta’s men dominated the game in the first half but failed to take their opportunities.

Leandro Trossard was denied by an exceptional save from Emiliano Martinez but the Belgian arguably should have done better from close range.

Bukayo Saka also went close on a couple of occasions and Arsenal were expected to make a fast start to the second half.

Instead, it was Villa who dominated proceedings after the break and Emery’s side overrun the Gunners in the middle of the park.

Arteta opted for a change in midfield on Sunday, with Kai Havertz dropping into a deeper role. It led to Jorginho dropping to the bench, with Gabriel Jesus moving up front and Trossard starting out wide.

Speaking on The Rest Is Football, Lineker admitted he was shocked to see Jorginho miss out on the clash against Villa.

“I was really surprised he didn’t play Jorginho because he’s been really good in recent weeks,” he said.

“Really good, and it obviously allows Rice to march more forward and he’s very good at running with the ball and breaking between the lines.

“So I was quite surprised. I think it was Paul Merson who said it was a mistake, he said it before the game. Fair play to him for recognising that.”
