Mikel Arteta has already set Emile Smith Rowe transfer stance as Chelsea eye shock Arsenal move

Chelsea are considering a shock move to sign Arsenal star Emile Smith Rowe before the summer transfer window closes on Friday. The 23-year-old is yet to feature in the Premier League this season, sparking speculation that he could leave the Emirates Stadium.

Smith Rowe was seen as a key figure after breaking into the senior team alongside fellow Hale End graduate Bukayo Saka. However, while Saka has been consistently available for Mikel Arteta, the same can’t be said for Smith Rowe.

The Spaniard has already made his stance over Smith Rowe’s future clear despite interest from Chelsea in the final days of the summer transfer window. Back in March, the Arsenal boss said: “He knows how much we love him, and we know how much we missed him and how much we need his qualities.

“And now he needs to prove it, he needs to prove how much he wants to win, and how much he’s going to contribute to this team to be better and win. And he’s going to have to show that to get in the team.

“I think we have to manage his load, but for sure he’s in a position where we can throw him in the team at any moment. And then it’s about how he’s coping with the team in general and whether we have to take him off or to use him in the last few minutes of the game.”

Arteta has already been critical of himself for not getting the best out of certain players who have a huge potential – due to injury problems and lack of game time in his squad. “I have to be critical of myself,” Arteta said earlier this year.

“My job is to get the best out of 24 players we have available and I haven’t been able to do that. There are three or four I would say that still have huge potential but for different reasons, they haven’t been able to do that [this season].

“Whether it’s injuries or game time or whether it’s because I haven’t had the opportunity or I have decided not to play them enough,” he added. With the return of Champions League football this term, Arsenal will need every member of their squad to play a key role and the Gunners have no intention of letting Smith Rowe leave during the summer transfer window.
