Mikel Arteta’s Arsenal side put on an impressive display that brought them within two points of league leaders Liverpool and just one point behind Manchester City. The victory marks Arsenal’s sixth consecutive win in the top-flight as they aim for their first title since 2004.
Goals from Sven Botman (an own goal) and Kai Havertz gave Arsenal a well-deserved lead at half-time. Bukayo Saka and Jakub Kiwior added to the scoreline in the second half, putting the game out of reach for Newcastle. Joe Willock, a former Arsenal midfielder, scored a late goal for Newcastle, but it was merely a consolation.
When asked about Arsenal’s chances of winning the title, Howe told beIN Sports: “Off the back of the game I have to say they’re right in it, the title race. They’re definitely one of the best teams we’ve played this season.”
Howe’s side have faced Arsenal twice this season, winning the first game 1-0 before losing the second 4-1. The Magpies have also faced Man City and Liverpool twice each already, losing all four games.
After suffering two consecutive losses against West Ham and Fulham during the festive period, Arsenal have been relentless in the Premier League. They bounced back with a resounding victory over Crystal Palace, followed by wins against Nottingham Forest, Liverpool, West Ham, Burnley and now Newcastle. They have scored 25 goals in the past six league matches and are starting to hit form at a crucial stage of the season.
