Nico Williams is a wanted man this summer as the Athletic Bilbao star attracts interest from England and Spain.

The 21-year-old had an impressive season with the La Liga side, scoring eight goals and assisting 17 in 37 appearances in all competitions. This impressive form has led to links with a move away from the San Mames Stadium with Arsenal, Tottenham and Barcelona tipped to make a move for the Spaniard.

Edu and Mikel Arteta are keen on the winger, who has a €50million (£42.1million) release clause in his contract. Williams fits into the Gunners recent transfer model of buying young, versatile players who have bags of potential.

Currently part of Luis de la Fuente’s Spain squad at Euro 2024, Williams’ focus is currently with the national side. Interestingly, he was asked about his future on Wednesday and perhaps provided a hint as to when Arsenal may be able to make their move.

Speaking to El Partidazo de COPE, Williams said: “I have [been] quite clear where I want to play next season. Athletic is my home. I am very happy. I have told my manager that I don’t want to know anything until the Euro cup is over.”

Spain kick-off their Euro 2024 campaign against Croatia on Saturday before further games against Italy on June 20 and Albania on June 24. You would expect Fuente’s side to progress to the knockout stages of the tournament, with the final taking place on Sunday, July 14.

That perhaps gives Edu an indication when he may be able to complete a transfer for Williams, should the Brazilian want to pursue a move for the winger. Arsenal are due to travel to America for their pre-season tour in July and Arteta has previously hinted that he wants business done before the Gunners fly out.

“That’s the ideal scenario,” Arteta said when asked if Arsenal were hopeful of getting their business done at the start of the window. “Every club wants that, we want that as coaches and for the players especially.

“Then for the team and for the environment. When you do that something clicks there and it’s really important because it starts to give you momentum.”
