Robbie Savage believes Andre Onana’s double save against Fenerbahce is better than David Raya’s for Arsenal during their draw against Atalanta last month.
The Manchester United goalkeeper pulled off an extraordinary double save during the first half of Thursday’s 1-1 stalemate in Istanbul. Onana has been in fine form for United this season but could not prevent Youssef En-Nesyri’s second-half equaliser after Christian Eriksen put Erik ten Hag’s side ahead.
United are yet to win in Europe this season, with their last victory in any European competition coming against Copenhagen in the Champions League a year ago. But the result in Turkey could have been much worse if not for Onana’s heroics.
And former midfielder Savage has heaped praise on the Cameroonian shot-stopper. The TNT Sports pundit’s first reaction was to compare Onana’s double save with that of Raya’s against Atalanta.
“Wow. We saw a double save in the Champions League from David Raya, but Onana here, I think that’s better,” Savage said in the TNT Sports gantry.
“The reactions there. [The first] one is brilliant, but to get up and at short notice, that’s a brilliant save. Jose [Mourinho] can’t believe it. What a double save.”
Onana’s performance left Fenerbahce boss Jose Mourinho in disbelief post-match. “Andre Onana made two fantastic saves. They scored in a situation we knew they could. We had a phenomenal performance,” he told TNT Sports.
“Come on, he saved the result. My goalkeeper didn’t make a save, he made two impossible saves in 10 seconds. He was the most decisive player in the result. Of course he didn’t make 20 saves but he made two that were incredible.
“I know English media will say Manchester United didn’t play well but I think it would be fair to say we did an extraordinary match and we were better than them. A good result for Manchester United.”
