Most of the Premier League’s elite have expressed interest in signing Rice this summer, with West Ham accepting he needs to be allowed to leave to play in the Champions League and compete for major trophies.

Arsenal were thought to be leading the transfer race and have already made two offers for the Hammers captain, who helped West Ham win the Europa Conference League in what will likely be his final game for the club.

But as West Ham rejected both bids, the two Manchester giants or Chelsea could yet secure a deal for the England star, who is said to be ‘open to any move’.

Asked where he expects Rice to end up, former Premier League manager Allardyce told the No Tippy Tappy Football podcast: ‘Man City – and someone will go the other way.

‘If I know Moysey [West Ham boss David Moyes], there would have to be a player in the deal for him and that would mean it would be easier for the club who is buying him because they wouldn’t have to pay David Sullivan’s asking price.

‘It would be over £100million in total but it would be so much under that if they include a player that would take the deal over £100m. And then David gets a new player he needs.’

Former West Ham midfielder Nigel Reo-Coker also expects Manchester City to win the race to sign Rice, telling BBC Radio Five Live: ‘Where is he going? That is going to be interesting because it’s the midfielders market this year.

‘Personally I think he wants to go to Arsenal, but I think West Ham won’t make it easy for him. There is real interest from Manchester City too with the situation with [Ilkay] Gundogan and [Bernardo] Silva.

‘I do personally believe there is strong interest from there, but I could see him going to Man City if I’m honest. That’s just my personal opinion.’
